Your dog is one of your best friends, and if you love also spending time at duck hunting, why not mix the two of them and learn your dog also how to hunt. You will have also some good chances if you have a golden Retriever or a Setter. The important thing is that your dog is not afraid of the water, he is willing to wait and stay patient and listens you (he does what you say).
In order to successfully use your dog as a partner at your duck hunt, you have to train him first. For example he doesn't know that the decoys you arranged in the field are not for fun, and you might see him willing to play with those, thinking that they are toys. So you should arrange the decoys in your own garden and walk him near them and around them, and if he wants to grab one, just make him understand that he is not allowed to. But be careful, because if you use the wrong tactics your dog might understand the wrong thing and he might be afraid of the decoys. Play with him near them, so that he is accustomed with their presence, but in the same time he learns to neglect them. Also the dog should be accustomed with the call of the duck, so that he won't hear it for the first time while you are hunting. The same thing for the shotgun: you don't want him to be afraid of the noise, he needs to understand that when he hears that noise, you might give him the command to retrieve the duck.
A good duck hunting dog would go and find the duck, even if it's in the water, and retrieves it to you. All that he needs is to get used to the scenario, and if he is going something wrong, you must correct him. Remember also that because you are in the nature, his attention might be disturbed because he is seeing and smelling many new things. So you will have o spend some time with him, so that he gets used with the new situation and also what he has to do. And remember, even if he is good at retrieving, it doesn't mean that he is a good duck hunting dog.
